Three little words

"I don't know" — it’s a phrase I used often as a young adult because uncertainty, unknowing and a lack of conviction were my constant companions.

As I became more sure of myself the “I don’t knows” shifted from being internal to all the stuff encyclopedias are full of.

To be honest, when I said “I don’t know” to my daughter it felt a little bit like laziness and a whole lot like failure.

Why don’t I know? She’d ask … and I didn’t have an answer.

Google searches aren’t difficult. My phone is almost an extra appendage at this point.

So, why didn’t I take the time to find out?

A lack of wonder? A demanding routine that didn’t seem to permit making time for curiosities? Being an adult?

I don’t know.
